I sometimes wonder what life would be like for people if the COVID-19 pandemic had not happened: one thing’s for sure, Lady Bushra (created by Amir Dean) wouldn’t happened. And my goodness, how much of a travesty were that the case. The lockdown period allowed for them to bring to stage this persona, self-described as ‘the brown Karen of the world!’. Dean was shortlisted for the BBC New Comedy Award in 2021, and has since toured a show Saree About It both in the UK and USA. Currently, Lady Bushra is living the American life and I had the pleasure to see this show at the famed Laurie Beechman theatre - which is part of West Bank Cafe.

This venue has been around for under fifty years and has hosted Tennessee Williams, Joan Rivers and now Lady Bushra! I have to say, as someone who has seen Bushra mature (does this 19-year-old Bradford Bad Girl actually grow up?!), the talent that oozes when she on stage is infectious. One moment, you may be playing a game of “Who Said That: RuPaul or a Maniac”, you could be in the running to wear a sari, or you could be having the most talented X Factor UK best bits lip synced within every inch of your life. It’s a masterclass in Drag, and she won’t be needing RuPaul’s DragRace franchise when she’s making it on the big time in the Big Apple.
